![]() ![]() Our highly skilled, fulltime, and talented team of applicators is here to make your space a work of art! We are dedicated to building careers for females in the decorative arts through our artisan program. Sylvia T Designs is the premier New Orleans and Gulf Coast decorative arts firm. Thanks to Demetrius, Randy, Lupita and the rest of the BuildStrong team for hosting us and making us feel welcome! We are thrilled to continue to develop this important relationship with them! This was our second visit (with more to come) where we had the chance to bring our entire team of all-female applicators/artisans and talk about what we do at Sylvia T Designs to their current group of students. We know first-hand about that – one of our newest Sylvia T Designs team/family members, Anna, joined us from this terrific institution (more on that soon!) The program teaches needed skills and connects graduates with job opportunities. It is always a joy and honor to pay a visit to our friends at BuildStrong Academy! It’s a great organization, part of HBI, that trains students from all walks of life in the wider construction industry. A big plus that tadelakt brings to the table is that it is breathable, hypoallergenic, and eco-friendly. With tadelakt, lime plaster is used along with soap from olive and coconut oils, which protects and seals, and, also, sand from marble or limestone as an aggregate. In the right hands, it delivers a seamless look, even across the wet and dry applications. It is also great for curves and tight corners. For example, it’s ideal for an all-over bathroom – the shower and sink (wet application) and walls and ceiling (dry application.)Įach application requires a different number of coats and the timing and skill to make it both functional and beautiful is critical. Tadelakt can be used in wet and dry applications. ![]() It requires a precise handcrafted application to ensure not only its functionality, but also to achieve a striking mottled and organic looking finish. It takes a highly skilled artisan to properly apply tadelakt. However, you can’t just hire your local “stucco and plaster guy” or just any decorative artist, for that matter, to handle a specialized product like this. It delivers lovely and subtle textures with natural, silky movement and tremendous depth. We are excited to announce that we are now experimenting with an ancient, traditional – and highly water-resistant – lime-based plaster known as Tadelakt.Beyond its functionality – ideal for use on bathroom walls and ceilings, showers, backsplashes, outdoor kitchens, pool houses, and more – it can also be something special aesthetically. For a unique touch over natural plaster base coats or even conventional drywall, ask about our clay veneers. We offer our own unique alises, lime-washes, clay finishes, and natural (non-off gassing) mineral-based silicate paints. Today, we are happy to offer a wide range of natural plastering finish-coats, in a wide range of textures and styles. We are always expanding our portfolio of plaster finishes. We are experienced at applying combinations of clay-straw, clay-sand, lime, or cement-lime base coats, but are always happy to experiment with other natural plastering materials! Natural Plaster Finishes Cost constraints and environmental factors will also affect your choice of natural base-coats. Our recommended base coat of plaster will depend on your wall system – whether you want us to plaster over straw-bale, light-straw, earth-block, rammed earth, or cob – or even if you’d like us to plaster over a conventionally-built wall system such as concrete, cinder-block or even western / stick-framed home. Resurrecting these ancient natural plastering techniques, our skillful artisans can adorn and protect your walls with hand-applied finishes of clay, clay-lime, lime, gypsum and many other natural plasters. Natural plasters have been protecting walls since prehistoric times, predating even Roman, Greek and Egyptian civilizations. Resurrecting Old-World Natural Plastering Materials and Techniques ![]()
